Millar Teams Sweep 2010 Basketball PAC Finals |
| |
|
|
Another year of basketball has come and gone again. Millar College held host to the Provincial Finals on March 19-20th to finish off the season on a positive note with a sweep in their own gym. Both Men's and Women's teams were strong this year, and maintained good standing in both the PAC and ACAL leagues.
The Men's team played a best of three series against the Great Plains Sundogs on Friday and Saturday in order to determine the 2010 PAC Provincial title. Friday night, veteran Jon McComish, led Millar to their first win with 21 points in the 81-45 victory. McComish was backed on defense by 4th year player, Stephen Luff, who shadowed Sundog's top player and shut down much of the play in the defensive end.
Game 2 took place Saturday afternoon when the Millar men captured the Provincial title with a 78-43 win, led in scoring by rookie, Rodrick Mwemera, who was awarded the 2010 League playoff MVP.
On the women's side, Millar played their provincial final on Saturday against the visiting Bethany Eagles. Coach Peters says that Millar dominated the game as the solid and consistent team that they have been all season. Leading the Millar ladies in scoring with 16 points, was rookie Amy Clark from Beaverton, Ontario. On the back end, the twin towers, veterans Rachel Doerksen and League Playoff MVP, Rylee Mortensen got the job done with their dominating defensive play.
Peters says "Mortensen earned her award with her tenacious work under the boards as she rebounded and fought for position throughout the duration of the game!"
Coach Peters was thrilled with the success of the teams, and is excited that his women's team does not graduate any players this year and can pick up next year where they left off.
Congratulations to both teams on a season well played, and for playing to a Home Team Millar sweep!

ACAL Basketball Finals Have Come and Gone
The basketball season took one step closer to finishing off as the Millar basketball teams traveled to Lacombe, Alberta to take part in the ACAL finals on the weekend.
The Men's team headed into the tournament ranked 5th, and started the weekend with a game against St. Mary's from Calgary. The men came out hard and played well, leading through most of the game. However, in the last quarter St. Mary's really stepped it up, taking the game with a disappointing 76-74 win. Coach Peters says the guys have nothing to be ashamed of, but it was disappointing for sure.
The loss sent the men to the Consolation final where they were challenged by the Ambrose University College team. Both teams were disappointed to have lost their earlier qualifying game, and were a little down. Coach Peters played his bench fairly equally and the team enjoyed their last game, regardless of the 66-44 loss. Peters says, 'The league was very strong this year, and to make it to the finals tournament was a good achievement. We finished in the top 6.'
The women entered the tournament tied in 2nd place. With an automatic by to the semi-final, the ladies played a tough game against St. Mary's as well, and although they worked hard, some inconsistent offense brought the team to a 55-46 loss.
The loss took the girls to the Bronze Medal game where they took to the court against Prairie Bible College. The girls led from start to finish with excellent full court pressure and great team defense. The end result was a winning score of 63-58, which the team celebrated by receiving the Bronze Medal Banner!
Congratulations to Jon McComish and Amy Clark who were awarded 1st Team All Star awards, and also to Deborah Rustebakke, who was awarded a 2nd Team All Star award. Great work guys!

| Basketball Teams Visit Olds, AB (February 5-6, 2010)
|
The Millar Basketball teams made the trek out to Olds, Ab this past weekend to meet the undefeated Olds College Broncos.
Coach Kevin Peters says that the weekend was a good learning experience for both teams, but for the men especially. Thursday evening Millar men faced off against Olds Broncos, and Peters says, "You could tell we just drove seven hours. We looked like we were running in the sand. There really was not much going for us. It was a blow out and our defense needed a lot of help."
The game ended with a decisive 117-66 score for the Broncos.
Friday, the men had a chance to play the Olds B team for a change. The continued to struggle with Olds' tenacious defense, and didn't manage much for scoring either. Coach Peters says that it was a frustrating game and the guys were really disappointed with the outcome; a 58-48 loss.
"However," he says, "we were able to have a really good talk that night about team play and what we could do to improve."
Saturday morning the men had another chance at the B team, and this time, looked much more prepared. They played extremely well according to Coach Peters, and managed to rally back and forth for the lead throughout the game with fantastic defense. The Millar men were rewarded for their hard work with a finishing score of 82-63.
The last game of the weekend for the men was played Saturday afternoon against the Broncos A team, and although Millar came out determined and played very strong defense, the game was never close. The undefeated Olds Broncos dominated with a score of 87-75. The Millar men currently sit in 5th place in the ACAL league.

The Millar Women's Edge also met up against Olds Broncos this past weekend in attempt to break the Broncos' undefeated record.
Friday night the Millar girls struggled to contain the taller players on the Broncos team, and it didn't help that Olds was shooting well to begin with. However, Millar managed to hold the Broncos down to 6 baskets in each quarter, until the fourth. Starting from 18 points going into the fourth, the Olds Broncos broke loose, finishing the game off with an 80-44 win. Coach Peters says that things just didn't fall as they could have. The team struggled in the fourth with their man to man defense.
Saturday dawned a new opportunity to gain back lost ground for the ladies when they re-met the Broncos. Millar came out with lots of hard work and determination and played a super zone defense. Peters says of the game, "The girls pushed the ball out and took great shots. On defense, they were only allowing Olds one shot, and then turning the play around."
Things started to turn near the end of the game when Captain, Rachel Doerksen, was fouled out of the game only two minutes into the fourth quarter. The Broncos started to chip away at Millar's lead, and continued to as veteran, Rylee Mortensen, joined Rachel on the bench with her quota of fouls with four minutes remaining in the game.
In the last minute of play, with the score tied, Olds hit a three to bump themselves up into the lead by two points. Millar was not to be beaten. Rookie Tanya Mortensen carried the ball down the court and answered back with a three for Millar to edge Millar one point ahead in the game.
Veteran Rebecca Toews joined Doerksen and Mortensen on the bench in the last minute of play, as rookie, Rebecka Screpnik, sealed the game with a huge defensive rebound... then hung on for the buzzer to finish with a one point lead of 64-63.
Coach Kevin Peters says he was pleased with the weekend, especially seeing his girls take a game off the previously undefeated Olds Broncos. The Millar Women now sit in second place in ACAL with 10 points, just two points below the leading Olds Broncos.

Millar Ladies Split Back-to-Back Games to Maintain ACAL Heights
Friday night the two top teams in ACAL met to challenge one another on first place in their league. Millar Ladies came into the night just two points above the St. Mary's Lightening. The gym was full of spectators, cheering on their toes, as the teams played neck to neck. With only seconds remaining on the clock, the Lightening scored a heart breaking basket which left the Edge with a miserable 48-47 loss.
Rookie, Deborah Rustebakke says that she felt her team played a strong defensive game.
"I think we worked well together and kept a good attitude regardless of the one point loss. It was disappointing, but we kept a good attitude."
Saturday afternoon brought with it the second of the back-to-back games in the Millar gym. The Edge and Lightening now sat at 6 points a piece at the top of the league. Millar left the day old loss in the past and surged forward with new intensity. Rustebakke states that they were sinking their three pointers, and worked hard not to get too proud as they edged forward on the scoreboard. With a good defensive game, an encouraging attitude, and a stronger offensive game, the Edge ladies pulled off a well earned 49-39 win.
For now, Millar continues to sit atop the Alberta League by two points. Next action is February 5-6th when the team travels to Olds, AB to face off against the Olds Broncos.

| Millar Edge Men Play Reversal Role
|
The Millar Edge men faced off against the visiting St. Mary's Lightening in a double header this weekend. However, in a reverse order of the ladies, the men won their first game 83-79, and dropped a disappointing 62-88 decision on Saturday.
When asked what the difference between Friday and Saturday's games were, Rodrick Mwemera, a rookie on the Millar team, said that the guys played more as a team on Friday night.
"We played superb defense, and they seemed to be shooting poorly."
In response to what happened on Saturday, Mwemera says that his team played a lazy defensive game.
"We came into the game expecting to win, and we didn't have that 'eye of the tiger' attitude," he says with a grin.
"We had a slow start and we didn't shoot nearly was well as we did on Friday night."
Mwemera and his team look to improve their record next weekend when they travel to Olds, Ab with the ladies team and play both the A and B teams for Olds College.

Millar Ladies Sit Atop ACAL Standings |
|
|
The Millar Edge Ladies Basketball team sits atop the Alberta College Athletics League standings as of Wednesday night, when the team traveled to Outlook, Saskatchewan to meet up against Bethany Eagles. The teams played at the LCBI boarding school gym where Millar veteran, Rylee Mortensen, played her high school basketball.
The Millar ladies found themselves playing an effective game, finishing after four quarters with a winning score of 93-43. Mortensen says, "We had a lot of height on them, which definitely helped, and we played a really strong game." Veterans, Rachel Doerksen and Rebecca Toews agree that the teams' height was a definite factor in the win, as well as their speed in moving the ball down the court. However, Doerksen also states, "Our shots just all seemed to go in. We were shooting really well."
Toews adds, "We played really tight defense too." The ladies seem pleased with their results and are looking forward to their next games this weekend; it will be a double header showdown in the Millar gym on Friday and Saturday, as the St. Mary's Lightening come from Calgary to challenge the Edge for the first place position. Millar sits at 6 points currently, only two points above St. Mary's, as well as the Prarie Pilots. Game times are as follows:
Friday (29th)- Women * 6:00 pm
- Men * 8:00 pm
Saturday (30th)- Women * 12:00 pm
- Men * 2:00 pm

| Millar Men Improve with Early Exhibition Game
|
On Tuesday night the Millar Men's team took on the visiting Great Plains College team from Swift Current in an early exhibition game. Millar's 4 year veteran, Stephen Luff, says that the game was a beneficial workout for an early season game. He believes that Millar's depth on the team helped the team pull this one out in a 72-56 win. The next action for the men is this Friday and Saturday in Millar's gym, where they will be hosting the St. Mary's team from Calgary.

| Basketball Teams Meet Up Against Ambrose (January 15-16, 2010)
|
On Friday and Saturday the Millar Men and Women both got their first taste of the ACAL League when they faced off against the Ambrose college teams. The men took to the court first and played a strong game, but had trouble shutting down the incredible perimeter shots of the Ambrose men who sunk three pointer after three pointer. Although Ambrose won the games, Millar was able to keep the score at the decent hold of 78- 87, and 73- 84.
The ladies team played the reverse role from the men. Rebecca Toews, last year's PAC league MVP, says that the Ambrose ladies were a lot tougher on Millar than Millar was on them, but she notes that it was her teams' quickness that helped them win both of their games with scores of 57-45, and 61- 54. Keep up the great work ladies!
