| ShootOut Finish Carries Millar Ladies to Provincial Title!
|
|
|
|
| | |
It was an exciting weekend as the Millar teams made their final trek of the year out to Hepburn, Sk to compete in the PAC League Provincial Finals.
The Ladies team headed into the tournament ranked 2nd, behind the Briercrest Clippers, who they had been battling for first place all season. For three tournaments in a row, Millar and Briercrest met in the final and always with the same result; a one-goal win by Briercrest. However, the Millar ladies never gave up and pushed hard until the very end!
The ladies met up against Bethany College Eagles in their first game of Provincials and started with the right foot forward with a 7-1 win. They then faced Briercrest for a chance at a by to the finals. After a hard fought game, the team could say only one phrase as they looked at the score board; "Deja vu!" The 4-3 loss sent Millar to a semi final game against Bethany Eagles once again where they eliminated the home team with a 2-1 score.
There were sparks in the blood that was pumping through the Millar veins as the ladies took to the floor for the final game of the season. Briercrest capitalized on the first goal, but the Edge spirit was not to be broken. The fire ignited and League All-Star, Jennilee Vellacott, fired in two consecutive goals to put Millar into a 2-1 lead. The ‘cherry on top’ goal was put in soon after by rookie, Sarah Haiko, also one of the League All-Stars this season. With a 3-1 lead, Millar was looking to win the championship.
However, part way through the second half, Briercrest moved within one goal, and with five seconds left in the game, scored the heartbreaker to tie the game at three.
A five minute, golden-goal overtime period ensued, which ran its course goalless. It was now up to the shootout to decide.
Briercrest #1- Shot stopped by Millar Keeper (Sandy Thiessen)
Millar #1- Goal scored by Krystal Ruten
Briercrest#2- Goal scored
Millar #2- Jennilee Vellacott's shot stopped
Briercrest #3- Shot missed the net
Millar #3- Goal scored by Sarah Haiko
Briercrest #4- Goal scored
Millar #4- Goal scored by Wendy Ruten
Briercrest #5- Shot stopped for the win!
What an adrenalin pumping finish to the season for the Millar Edge Ladies, who took home the Provincial title after the shootout!
On the men's side, the Millar men were eliminated in the quarter-final against Nipawin Bible Institute, who went on to eliminate Bethany Eagles, then lose to the Briercrest Clippers 4-0 in the final.
What an exciting weekend for both the players and the fans. Thanks to everyone who came out to show their support!

| One Week Left Until PAC Indoor Soccer Finals!
|
One week remains in the PAC team's time line to get in shape for the Final Provincial tournament which will be held in Hepburn at the Bethany College. This past weekend settled the league standing titles, as both the Men and Women's teams from Briercrest captured the titles.
The 19th and 20th held plenty of excitement for the teams as they traveled up to Nipawin to play in the final league games. It was a fantastic display of athleticism and versatility as the teams adjusted to the different size and shape of the Nipawin gym.
Both Millar teams played out a competitive tournament with the men's team losing to Bethany by a disappointing score of 3-2.
The Women played a fantastic tournament, standing in second place going into the semi-finals where they beat out Bethany College by a score of 5-0, then went on to lose an incredibly tight game to Briercrest Women by a score of 4-3.
Congratulations to Sarah Haiko and Dean Neudorf for being named tournament All-stars for their respective teams.
Next action for the soccer teams will be PAC Finals at Bethany College on March 26-27, 2010.

Millar Ladies Sit Tied for 1st Place in PAC Indoor Soccer League |
| | |
This weekend held plenty of excitement for the Millar Indoor Soccer teams once again when the PAC league met once again to compete for another tournament title. The Millar Ladies started the weekend with a high intensity game against the Briercrest Clippers, who sat just one game under the Millar team for 1st place in League Standings. The Millar ladies played a well fought game, but came out under Briercrest with a 4-3 loss. Although the team was disappointed, they maintained their intensity and won the next two games against Bethany and Nipawin 7-1, and 11-0 respectively. The team then went on to beat Bethany in the semi final with a decisive 10-0 finish to meet Briercrest in the final.
In the final, veteran and key scoring threat, Jennilee Vellacott, was unable to play with an injured leg. However, the teams played neck and neck, with Millar scoring the first two goals. Briercrest was quick to answer back with two goals of their own. From there, Millar Ladies scored once again, then were outplayed in the last few minutes to end the game with a 5-3 loss.
Vellacott says, "It was hard to just watch and not be able to play, but it was a good reminder to be content in whatever situation God has placed me in."
Vellacott travels with her team next weekend to Nipawin Bible Institute to take part in their home tournament.
On the Men's side, Millar was faced with a challenging situation as both keeper (Seth Maier) and back-up (Joel Ruten) were injured and not able to play net. Defenseman, Dean Neudorf took up the challenge of playing Keeper and did a fantastic job for his first time. He admits it was a steep learning curve, but a good experience overall.
Neudorf and his team placed fourth in the round robin and were eliminated in the semi finals by the first place, Briercrest Clippers.
Congratulations to Michael Ruten and to Sarah Haiko who were named Tournament All- Stars for their teams this weekend.

Millar Indoor Soccer Teams Sweep Alumni Tournament |
| |
|
|
Familiar faces and voices once again filled the Millar gym as the annual Alumni and Friends Indoor Soccer Tournament arrived for 2010. Both the men's and women's pools had a good representation, holding four teams a piece.
The Millar men were joined by a Millar 2 team, as well as an Alumni team, and Maher Shalel Hash Baz, from the Saskatoon league.
The women's team faced off against an Alumni team, as well as DIOTI and Martureo, two teams also coming in from Saskatoon.
The weekend held host to much excited visiting, enthusiastic cheering, and fantastic displays of superior soccer skills. Both the men and women's pools provided plenty of suspense and action right up until the last seconds of play.
At the end of the round robin, the Millar Ladies sat in second place, having lost only once to DIOTI. The Millar Alumni sat in fourth place, but were not content to finish there. In a fantastic display of consistency and defense, the Alumni managed to hold first place, DIOTI, off to a 1-1 finish in the semi-final, then continue to a seat gripping shootout which eliminated the first place team with a score of 3-1!
To follow suit, the Millar ladies eliminated Martureo in the second semi-final with a shootout score of 3-1. The final held host to the two shootout champions, and in a well played and high action final, the Millar team brought home the gold in a 3-1 win.
On the men’s side, Maher Shalel Hash Baz fought as the underdogs to eliminate the second place Alumni team, making an amazing comeback from a 5-1 deficit, to score 6 unanswered goals and win the game to meet Millar in the final. Adrenalin ran high as Millar and MSHB scored back and forth until they sat tied at 2-2. With only minutes left in the game, MSHB scored a heartbreaker to gain the advantage. However, the Millar men did not give up hope, and with a mere 3 seconds left on the clock, Christopher Stregger scored a beauty goal off a free kick to bring both the crowd and his teammates to their feet!
With the three seconds expired on the clock, the teams entered into a shootout to decide the champion. Millar coach, Phil Ruten, replaced keeper, Seth Maier, with Joel Ruten, the back up keep… and the game was on. With sharp shots from four Millar men, as well as a few key saves in net from Joel Ruten, the Millar men finished the tournament with a first place score of 4-3 in the shootout. What an exciting weekend! Next Millar Indoor action will take place February 26-27th when the teams travel to Bethany College.

Millar Teams Enjoy Weekend at Bethany PAC Tournament |

| Millar Women Stand Atop PAC Indoor Soccer League
|
The Millar Ladies Indoor Soccer team played a fantastic tournament this weekend in Hepburn, Saskatchewan where they met up against Bethany College, Nipawin Bible Institute, and Briercrest College and Seminary.
'We played a really strong tournament,' says Millar keeper, Sandy Thiessen.
'Our team played really hard and was able to finish the round robin with a 3-0 record. We beat Nipawin in the semi-final with a score of 6-0, and then went on to face Briercrest in the final. Our girls played really hard, but we encountered a few defensive breakdowns, and faced some fantastic shots from Briercrest that resulted in goals. In the second half we were sitting at a score of 4-1, but with some determination we were able to bring the score back up to 4-3 with only a few minutes left in play. We hit crossbars and posts, but couldn't find the net to tie up the game. It was frustrating to lose to a team we had beaten earlier, but it was a fun game and I think we learned lots from it. We'll see them again in two weeks and it should be a good match up again!'
Thiessen's team has two weeks to work on things before they meet up against the PAC teams again in their home tournament on March 12-13.
In the Men's side of the tournament, the Millar team finished the round robin in second place and went on to the semi-final against third place Briercrest, and were beaten in a decisive 10-0 loss. Coach Phil Ruten says with a chuckle that it's always good for a team to get beaten early on in the season, and he hopes that game can be a growing experience for his team.
Congratulations to both Sandy Thiessen and Michael Ruten for winning the Tournament All-Star awards for their respective teams.
