Short-Term Missions Opportunities |
|
|
Purpose
As an extension of their on-campus formal training, many upperclass students at Millar are given the opportunity to participate in a short-term missions trip, usually overseas. Experiencing a different culture can be life-changing and helps bring into focus a global perspective of how God is working outside the student's particular context. Our commitment is to partner with evangelical missions who share our vision for training men and women in reaching the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Muli Bwanji!
Muli bwanji!
After our second week in Malawi, our spirits are remaining high, in spite of challenges and adjustments. The days are full and tiring (should I say exhausting?) but we are grateful for the opportunity to be here and serve the best we can. One praise item - we are all healthy & well - just minor discomforts and too much sun.
Our daily routine is to get up around 6:30, have breakfast at 7:30, and head out for our morning project around 8:00. We typically eat an African meal at noon out in the area of ministry - rice, cabbage, sima (ground corn) and chicken - all with our fingers. Then we have an afternoon project and head home for supper at 6:00. The sun goes down at this time, and we don't venture off the mission compound at night.
Virtually all of our work is out in the villages. The Malawi countryside is dotted with villages, so there is a lot of people, but most of them are not in major cities. People live in small homes made of mud bricks and grass roofs. The clothing of most children is faded, worn and torn. Our main mode of transportation is by truck, with half of the team inside, and half in the back.
Our projects include a variety of physical work (roofing repairs, building latrines for churches, goat shelters for families, etc.) and other ministries (blanket distribution, kids programs, youth Bible studies, women's programs, etc.). Our missionary hosts, Chet & LeAnne Burns have done a great job in organizing the schedule and giving us a taste of life on the mission field.
The pastors we have worked with have very little, and are appreciative of anything we can do. The people are very friendly and welcoming.
When we drive through the villages we constantly get waves and cheers.
This past Sunday we enjoyed the fellowship of two different churches, and had communion services which were a great blessing.
Beth has returned home already for her teaching schedule. Scott Gillespie & I continue to lead the team, along with a short term worker (Sarah Parlee - from the maritimes).
Thank you so much for your prayers. Do remember us as we continue over the next couple of weeks.
In Him,
Ron

This year Millar College will be participating with ACTION International to send a team of seven students to Malawi, Africa. ACTION representative Scott Gillespie, along with Ron & Beth Reynolds will be preparing the team and taking them to Malawi immediately after grad weekend (April 18 – May 19/2011).
Malawi is a very primitive country where agriculture is the major economy, but much is still done by hand. It is also one of the African countries most severely affected by HIV/Aids. Poverty and children in crisis are significant issues.
The students on the team are: Janet Friesen, Linsay Diesen, Josh Beutler, Zach Klassen, Kayla Luff, Joe Ross and Kaitlyn Rushton. They will be working with ACTION missionaries Chet & LeAnne Burns, who minister among several rural churches. The students are looking forward to a variety of opportunities, including children’s ministry, youth ministry, leading worship, sharing in church services, and of course doing some manual labour in work projects as well.
Pray for them that they will have a safe trip, remain healthy and be a blessing to the churches in Malawi.
