Alumni and Friends Outdoor Soccer Tournament 2011

The Season

Due to teams pulling out of PAC, there was no Outdoor Soccer League this year. Instead, the Millar students formed several small teams and an in-house league was formed. In this league teams played 7 on 7 every Monday and Wednesday. The games were intense with some amazing goals as well as saves. Everyone was able to get lots of play time and improve on various skills. While this was different from what everyone expected, the outdoor season was great and we all had a lot of fun. Thanks to the fans who came out for all the games and to Mr. Ruten for setting everything up.

Sports Hour With Klumpenhower

The weather outside was frightful but the sports were so delightful. Intense sun rays pounded on the sweaty athletes as they exerted much energy running up and down the soccer field. Spectators, both young and old, lined the field to cheer on their team despite the hot, humid weather. The reason: The Millar College of the Bible Alumni Soccer Tournament. Friday evening the tournament kicked off with the men's teams. First, MCB 2 played MCB 1 in a game which MCB 2 won. In the cool of the next morning, Alumni defeated MCB 1 in match that set the tone for the rest of the day. Later that afternoon the women's teams began to play. The match between MCB and Alumni was close but MCB slipped by with the victory, winning 2-1. After the women played, the men's Alumni tied MCB 2 1-1. The weather was getting hotter and hotter but the games were getting better and better. The finals were getting underway and the crowds began to grow in number. This year the final was done a little differently. Because the two men's Millar teams were divided up evenly, fifteen of the best players were taken to make an all-star team to face the Alumni. This group of guys will also be the team that plays throughout the rest of the season. After the teams were made the finals began. Back and forth went the score in the women's final as the teams traded goals with each other. At the end of the second half, the score was tied and a shootout was on the horizon. No one could foresee the outcome but all were on the edge of their seats waiting, waiting, and waiting for the final goal. Finally, the MCB team managed to score the game winning goal giving them the championship t-shirts. After that intense match, the men jogged onto the field and stretched their aching bodies with one goal in mind: victory. Sweat poured down their brows as they competed with much passion. In the end, the Alumni could not defeat MCB.
The weekend was a ball. The event was a great time of fellowship as strangers conversed with strangers and old friends repaired fraying friendships. Bethany Unger, who played for MCB, summed the weekend up this way, "It was a great time of healthy competition." Even though everyone could not have the title of a champion, it is said that "The Vision of a Champion is someone who is bent over, drenched in sweat, and the point of exhaustion, when no one else is watching." In the end each player was a champion for the effort they put in.
