PAC Provincial Finals Bring Excitement to the Floor!
The Millar College Gym filled with dedicated fans and determined players this weekend as the PAC volleyball season for 2009 came to a close. Each team came with their top play, and in the end it came down to the wire. On the Women's side, Great Plains played a strong game to knock the Millar ladies out in the semi-final in two sets with scores of 25-19, and 25-13. The Great Plains Sundogs went on to challenge the League Champions, Kelsey Ladies, in the final. The Dogs played a phenomenal game, taking the first two sets from Kelsey with the tight scores of 26-24, and 25-22. However, the veteran Kelsey team stood strong and fought back with incredible stamina, winning the last three sets with scores of 25-15, 15-21, and 15-6. Congratulations to Carli Anderson for winning Playoff MVP for the 2009 season.

The Men's draw saw the 4th place underdogs, the Great Plains Sundogs eliminate the League Champs, Kelsey men, in the semi final with scores of 25-20 and 25-18. Millar Men Win the Sportsmanship Award

~Epic Battle of the SouthWest~
*Last night Great Plains College hosted the fourth annual Battle of the Southwest at Irwin School gym in Swift Current. Fans from both teams filled the gym with whistles, air horns, and home team pride. The much publicized event has brought much excitement in the past three years, and this year was no exception. The women took to the floor first, with Millar College holding the history of victory in the last three years, and gunning for a fourth undefeated record. The game was best of five, and Millar started out the first set by taking the lead. The women played a fantastic set and kept on top until the very end when the Great Plains women surged forward to take the set in the last few points. There was no turning back from there as the Great Plains women went on to win the next two sets to hold the Southwest cup for the first time ever!

The Millar men stepped out onto the court holding the same undefeated record as the ladies. However, the end of the evening for the men's team held different results. Millar played a hard hitting and defensive game to begin, and won two straight sets, but Great Plains was not going down easy. They fought back and evened the game out at 2 and 2. In the third set to fifteen, Dane Morstad made some incredibly aggressive kills, along with the support play of his team to finish the game and keep the Southwest cup in the Millar showcase for another year. Congratulations on your win men, and to Stephen Luff for winning the All-Star of the game. Thank you to all the fans who came out to cheer! Your support in noise and color was fantastic!

PAC Tournament Decides League Titles
The Millar gym was once again filled with the sounds and smells of volleyball this weekend as the Great Plains college hosted their PAC tournament on Millar grounds. The tournament brought plenty of intensity and will to win as teams rallied to move up in the standings before entering the PAC Finals draw. On the girls side, Kelsey once again played a consistent tournament which lead them to their third consecutive weekend win. Although the ladies' teams fought hard, and some even took the Kelsey ladies to three sets, the Saskatoon team stood firm and finished the season undefeated in every match, capturing the league title as well.

The mens' side was not quite so cut and dried. The fight for the league title was a toss up between the Kelsey Men and Millar Men. Both teams entered the weekend tied for first place in the league and pushing for big wins in the weekend. The round robin games between the two were close, with Kelsey edging Millar out by a very few points to take the league title. However, the Millar men got a second chance in the final when they met Kelsey again for two intensely played sets in which Millar reached 23 points first both times. Unfortunately, with some breathtaking rallies and eye widening plays, the Kelsey men managed to win both sets by a score of 25-23. Great work to both teams for the fantastic games, and for all your hard work out on the court. It was thrilling to watch! Congratulations to Sandy Thiessen and Seth Maier for winning the tournament All-Star awards for the Millar teams.

Millar volleyball's next challenge is this Wednesday night (November 4) starting at 6:30 in the Irwin school gym in Swift Current where Great Plains College is hosting the televised Battle of the South West. It is sure to be a good game to watch, with plenty of good fans and fun prizes! Come on out and join the fun!

Alumni and Friends Come out Swinging!
The weekend was a blur of re-meeting friends, seeing new babies, eating great food, and of course, making the big plays on the volleyball court. The tournament hosted some great volleyball on both Men's and Women's side. The Men's volleyball was represented by seven teams: The Oldtimers (from Medicine Hat), The YoungGuns (Medicine Hat), Millar 1, Millar 2, Koinonia (from Olds, AB), Old Almuni (aka: Coach and Company!), and the Young Alumni. Four teams were entered on the Women's side, including the Millar Ladies, The Pink Foxes (Medicine Hat), Alumni 1, and the Sunshine Squad (Fox Valley/Swift Current).

Squeaking shoes and pounding balls echoed throughout the gym Friday until eleven P.M.,when the last games ended and players headed to bed. The results of Friday's play left the Pink Foxes at the top of the Women's pool, and the Millar 1 and Koinonia at the tops of their respective pools on the Men's side.

Saturday proved to be a day of upsets as both the Millar 1 Men's team and Koinonia were eliminated in the playoffs by the Old Almuni and the YoungGuns to enter into the final. What an intense final game! The men exchanged hit for hit, and block for block, but in the end, the YoungGuns pulled the trigger and hit the target with two straight games, beating the Alumni by very few points in both sets!

On the Women's side, the Alumni team was eliminated after taking the Pink Foxes to three sets in two consecutive games! Great work by the Alumni to come together for one weekend and put up such great play! In the other semi-final, the Sunshine Squad edged out the Millar Ladies in three close set, ending with a 15-13 score. In the final, the Sunshine Squad played a strong offensive game and managed to pull out a win in the third set with very tight scores once again. Congratulations to the Sunshine Squad and the YoungGuns for winning the tournament, and thank you to everyone who came out to play and cheer. The weekend was a great success!

PAC Volleyball @ Bethany
(October 2-3)
Millar's Mighty Men Conquer Again!

Men's Team Takes Detour to Final
Millar's Mighty Men found a new road to playing in the finals at Bethany on the weekend. Rather than placing first in the round robin as they did in last week's tournament, the men dropped a match to both Woodland SIAST as well as Kelsey SIAST. With a 2 and 2 record, the men fought hard to eliminate Great Plains in the semi final, and moved on to victory over Kelsey SIAST to capture the top spot in their second consecutive PAC tournament. Congratulations to Sarah Haiko and Jon McComish for winning the Tournament All-Star awards for the Millar teams.

Men's Volleyball Team Takes Opening Tournament!
PAC Volleyball @ Saskatoon
(September 25-26)
The 2009 PAC volleyball season was a hit as the Kelsey SIAST hosted the opening tournament this weekend in the Saskatoon Soccer Centre. With the addition of the Prince Albert SIAST to the PAC league, the number of ladies teams was bumped up to seven teams battling for the first win of the season while the mens' side remained at five teams rallying for top position.

The coaches and players stayed busy moving from one court to the next on the three courts of the Soccer Centre and provided the strong fan support with plenty to cheer about. The Millar Men's team played a solid tournament, leaving the round robin in first place with no losses. The team went on to conquer Kelsey Men in the semi final in two straight sets, then continued on to win the final against Swift Current's Great Plains Sundogs in two sets with the impressive scores of 25-8, and 25-15.

The Womens' team came out swinging in the tournament, beating all but two teams; Kelsey SIAST and St. Peters in the round robin and finishing in second place. From there, they faced the Great Plains College in the second vs. third place, final falling in two sets with scores of 19-25, and 23-25.

The tournament was well played by all, and it was exciting to see the growth of both the teams and the new players as the tournament progressed. Congratulations to the men on their first place finish and also to Stephen Luff and Sandy Thiessen who were named the Millar team All-Stars of the tournament!
